What’s in a Patent?
One of the many things that sets Hydrade apart from all other sports drinks is its patent protected hydration formulation. In the multi-billion dollar sports drink industry, patent protection is extremely important as there is no longer patent protection for the standard carbohydrate-electrolyte sports drink. This lack of exclusivity is the reason why so many companies are developing different versions of the same commercial drink.
Hydrade is unique because of its patent. The fact that Hydrade was able to patent its formula shows that scientific evidence supports Hydrade’s ability to aid in hydration. Hydrade was developed through extensive scientific research to be superior to the typical carbohydrate-electrolyte sports drink, and the patent is evidence that the mission was accomplished.
Glycerol – The Key to Improving Hydration
How does Glycerol improve hydration?
Very simply, Glycerol (a naturally occurring metabolite in the body) bolsters hydration by allowing the body to absorb and retain more water. The human body contains a large volume of water, which is distributed in blood, between cells and within cells, with most of the body’s water residing within cells. Hydration occurs when the body moves water out of the blood and into and between the cells, which can be a slow process.
Many people attempt to hydrate by drinking water or a typical carbohydrate-electrolyte sports drink, which can make the blood diluted and therefore cause the body to increase urine production.
Glycerol, which is found in blood and body water at very low concentrations, is a highly diffusive molecule with characteristics that enable it to attract water. Specifically, Glycerol helps water move from the blood to between and within the cells, and adding more Glycerol to the body speeds this process, which in-turn improves hydration capacity
In addition, Glycerol decreases water filtration by the kidney, causing less urine volume and effectively helping the body retain more water.
Glycerol and Hydrade
Hydrade was created by University of New Mexico exercise physiologist and biochemist Dr. Robert Robergs. Dr. Robergs developed Hydrade’s formula after working with fellow scientists funded by NASA to explore the potential of Glycerol, to help astronauts cope with fluid loss and cardiovascular stress when re-entering the earth’s atmosphere.
Dr. Robergs extended this work based on his own further detailed research and developed Hydrade’s unique formula in 1998 to include Glycerol. Hydrade is now the only sports drink made with glycerol, and remains the only sports drink that features a research-based validation of the claim that it can improve body hydration, whether at rest, during exercise or in recovery from dehydration.
Science Matters
Hydrade was developed with a specific purpose in mind – To Improve Hydration. Its formula has been carefully pieced together through comprehensive scientific research to provide consumers with a product that offers maximum hydration, as well as nutritional benefits. The Hydrade team has figured out a way to improve hydration, while offering an overall healthier product.
Compared to commercial carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks, Hydrade is made with:
- 100% Natural Cane Sugar
- More Vitamin C
- More Potassium
- Less Sugar
- Less Carbohydrates
The result is the ultimate sports drink.
In contrast, the commercial sports drinks widely known to consumers are made with a generic carbohydrate-electrolyte formula. These drinks are marketed to consumers as a way to improve performance, endurance and hydration. But unlike Hydrade,
NO research evidence exists to show that carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks improve whole body hydration better than water.
Since the inception of the first commercial sports drink over 40 years ago, not one study has proven that a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink is the best means to promote hydration. Without any scientific evidence, consumers are relying on the claims of various advertising and promotional campaigns, and are spending money on products that don’t have nearly the same benefits as Hydrade.
